Case Studies: Maintenance Engineer

My name is Roy Russell and my job is Maintenance Engineer at a 5 star hotel in Leeds. I have been in the industry approximately 8 years, all of it being in the maintenance department.

Maintenance EngineerThe job is really varied and is geared around the safety of the hotel guests and staff and secondly the maintenance of the fabric of the hotel both inside and outside. One of the things I like about the job is that because it is so varied you tend to meet a lot of people.

The job is never the same one day to the other. Every day is a challenge and you are often juggling priorities to keep everyone happy.

I dont work this hotel alone, we have a 3 man team, a fitter for mechanical work, we have a painter and decorator for the internal fabric of the hotel and between us we run the hotel and keep it as clean and tidy as we can.

A Day in the Life

  • Start work 8am
  • Check all pump rooms and electrical switch rooms including the salt levels for the water supply to the whole hotel.
  • Report to the Receptionist, Head Housekeeper and usually General Manager to check for any problems during the night.
  • Attend DASH meeting to check the days business in the hotel.
  • Pick up fidelio sheets which detail the work to be done in the hotel. Work is prioritised and delegated to the rest of the team.
  • Deal with any emergencies as they arrive, along with telephone calls and contractors on site of which there are many!!
  • Undertake weekly fire bell testing
  • Check security barriers are in working order
  • Run generator to check it is in working order
  • Air handling units are checked every 2 weeks along with emergency lighting, meters are read and recorded on a weekly basis, gas, water, electricity
  • My day to day work can vary greatly dependent on occurrences throughout all the departments in the hotel.
  • I will get called up to reception from time to time for show rounds, my clients or a pool test.
  • When my shift is finished I will go home to relax ready to make a great start to my next day...
